Friday, Aug 17, 2007 - Our big tent is accidentally sent to San Diego instead of Seattle (Northwest airlines), so we start off the weekend with some creatively crowded tents and a little prayer for a warm, dry night.
Sat, Aug 18, 2007 - Mid 70’s, partly cloudly, low wind slightly increasing in the afternoon.
Flaming Moe 16 Brass Monkey 14 - The first half is very tightly contested with each team getting 1 break and the half ending on serve 7-8 BM. Our D line finds more success on offense in the second half. At 15-14 Moe, we break to win 16-14.
Flaming Moe 9 Shazam Returns 15 - Shazam comes out firing with some very impressive play. Their defense gets the early jump on us going up 0-2. We eventually break back to bring it to 6-6. At 6-7, they pull to us, and we let them break us again, making half 6-8. After several marathon points in the second half, Shazam blows the game open, taking a 7 point lead.
Bye: Many watch the Buzz Bullets battle Furious George and Sub Zero v Revolver, as well as Shazam v Mischief.
Flaming Moe 13 Mischief 15 - Mischief just came off a tough loss to Shazam, and we take an early lead with a break for 5-3, but they get it back for 5-5. Again we pull away with a break to 7-5 after a terribly long O point, and they mount a big run. They take half 7-8 and make it 7-11 before we can score. We start to push back: 8-11. 8-12. 9-12. 10-12. 10-13. 10-14. With them at game-point we manage 3 before their O puts one in for a 13-15 final.
Sunday, August 19th - Cooler temperatures (50’s?) and light rain make for a wet playing atmosphere. By the 3rd game the rain lets up and the sun finally shows, making for warmer weather, and a bit of wind kicks up too.
Flaming Moe 12 Slow White 15 - We trade breaks at 1-2 and 3-2. A closely fought game to 5-5, but we start dropping the disc and they hammer out a few for a 5-8 half. Both teams have a couple of moisture-related mistakes on throws, too, but probably more on our end. After half, we get back in the game, trading points and playing stronger, but unfortunately the damage was already done and we just couldn’t get a break, trading from 5-8 to 12-15.
Flaming Moe 15 The Horde 7 - The Horde is win-less at this point, and no doubt is getting desperate for a W, but we have 3 losses ourselves and aren’t eager for another. We get up a break in the first half with a bit cleaner offense and intense D for 8-6. We receive after half and put it in for 9-6. Their O makes it 9-7, and our O answers back for 10-7 After that, we ramp up our defense and capitalize on offense, and we get 5 straight breaks for a 15-7 final.
Flaming Moe 16 Flycoons 15 - After 2 meetings with the Mental Toss Flycoons last season, we meet again for our last game in Seattle (Shazam had a lock on finals, and it was between Mischief and Slow White for the other spot). The Flycoons have a lot of familiar faces, including 2 new pickups from Minneapolis. They play very impressive offense early on, taking a 4-8 lead at half. We begin the 2nd half with a break for 5-8, but their run isn’t over, and they lengthen their lead to 6-11. Our O makes it 7-11, and we start calling our top defensive lines, trying to get back in the game. Our pressure on D gives us several short-field offensive opportunities, which we take advantage of, and the comeback begins. 8-11. 9-11. 10-11. 10-12. 11-12. 12-12. Timeout Moe (to rest the D). 13-12. 14-12. 14-13. Our O has a shot to end the game, but they break us to keep it exciting at 14’s. Softcap goes on, so it is hard to 16. Our O line comes through for 15-14. Flycoon’s blogging all-star Tim Murray launches a backhand break huck for 15-15. We receive going upwind on universe, and unfortunately turn it over in their red zone. We get it back, however, and convert the point for the win: 16-15!
Big thanks to Jon Ladd and the rest of the crew that made Spawnfest such an excellent event!
