Spawnfest Elite 2007 Recap

August 28, 2007 | 2007 | 4:05 pm | Comments [0] |

Friday, Aug 17, 2007 - Our big tent is accidentally sent to San Diego instead of Seattle (Northwest airlines), so we start off the weekend with some creatively crowded tents and a little prayer for a warm, dry night.

Sat, Aug 18, 2007 - Mid 70’s, partly cloudly, low wind slightly increasing in the afternoon.

Flaming Moe 16 Brass Monkey 14 - The first half is very tightly contested with each team getting 1 break and the half ending on serve 7-8 BM.   Our D line finds more success on offense in the second half.  At 15-14 Moe, we break to win 16-14.

Flaming Moe 9 Shazam Returns 15 - Shazam comes out firing with some very impressive play.  Their defense gets the early jump on us going up 0-2.  We eventually break back to bring it to 6-6.  At 6-7, they pull to us, and we let them break us again, making half 6-8.  After several marathon points in the second half, Shazam blows the game open, taking a 7 point lead.

Bye: Many watch the Buzz Bullets battle Furious George and Sub Zero v Revolver, as well as Shazam v Mischief.

Flaming Moe 13 Mischief 15 - Mischief just came off a tough loss to Shazam, and we take an early lead with a break for 5-3, but they get it back for 5-5.  Again we pull away with a break to 7-5 after a terribly long O point, and they mount a big run.  They take half 7-8 and make it 7-11 before we can score.  We start to push back:  8-11.  8-12.  9-12.  10-12.  10-13.  10-14.  With them at game-point we manage 3 before their O puts one in for a 13-15 final.

Sunday, August 19th - Cooler temperatures (50’s?) and light rain make for a wet playing atmosphere.  By the 3rd game the rain lets up and the sun finally shows, making for warmer weather, and a bit of wind kicks up too.

Flaming Moe 12 Slow White 15 - We trade breaks at 1-2 and 3-2.  A closely fought game to 5-5, but we start dropping the disc and they hammer out a few for a 5-8 half.  Both teams have a couple of moisture-related mistakes on throws, too, but probably more on our end.  After half, we get back in the game, trading points and playing stronger, but unfortunately the damage was already done and we just couldn’t get a break, trading from 5-8 to 12-15.

Flaming Moe 15 The Horde 7 - The Horde is win-less at this point, and no doubt is getting desperate for a W, but we have 3 losses ourselves and aren’t eager for another.  We get up a break in the first half with a bit cleaner offense and intense D for 8-6.  We receive after half and put it in for 9-6.  Their O makes it 9-7, and our O answers back for 10-7  After that, we ramp up our defense and capitalize on offense, and we get 5 straight breaks for a 15-7 final.

Flaming Moe 16 Flycoons 15 - After 2 meetings with the Mental Toss Flycoons last season, we meet again for our last game in Seattle (Shazam had a lock on finals, and it was between Mischief and Slow White for the other spot).  The Flycoons have a lot of familiar faces, including 2 new pickups from Minneapolis.   They play very impressive offense early on, taking a 4-8 lead at half.  We begin the 2nd half with a break for 5-8, but their run isn’t over, and they lengthen their lead to 6-11.  Our O makes it 7-11, and we start calling our top defensive lines, trying to get back in the game.  Our pressure on D gives us several short-field offensive opportunities, which we take advantage of, and the comeback begins.  8-11. 9-11. 10-11. 10-12. 11-12. 12-12.  Timeout Moe (to rest the D).  13-12.  14-12.  14-13.  Our O has a shot to end the game, but they break us to keep it exciting at 14’s.  Softcap goes on, so it is hard to 16.  Our O line comes through for 15-14.  Flycoon’s blogging all-star Tim Murray launches a backhand break huck for 15-15.  We receive going upwind on universe, and unfortunately turn it over in their red zone.  We get it back, however, and convert the point for the win: 16-15!

Big thanks to Jon Ladd and the rest of the crew that made Spawnfest such an excellent event!

Minnesota Ultimate Disc Invitational 2007 Recap

July 24, 2007 | 2007 | 12:32 pm | Comments [1] |

Saturday, July 21st - Mid 80’s, upwind/downwind (5-15mph, gusty).

Flaming Moe 13 Oh Boy 3 - Oh Boy is a new team with great attitude and a lot of athleticism.

Flaming Moe 13 Soy Nuts 3 - We took half 7-3 and then took our play up another notch.

Flaming Moe 13 Kablammo 8 - Kablammo connected on some impressive hucks by Mark Rusch (and others) with some very athletic plays, and showed that nobody can look past them when they come to play.  We took half 7-3, they bring it within 2 at 7-5, we pull back away and then trade out to win by 5.

Flaming Moe 13 Hungry Hippos 5 - The Hippos are a new team from Chicago with players from teams Optimus Lime, 3rd Coast, and Xolo.  Moe felt we played our best game of Saturday this round, cleaning up our offense and stepping up our defense.  HH had several succesful beautifully placed long hucks to a couple of athletic ladies, and also displayed excellent handler movement in the backfield.  We trade to 2-2, then we get an upwind break and the ensuing downwind to take a 4-2 lead.  Half is 7-3.  A hard fought game.

Sunday, July 22nd - Cloudy, hot, still gusty upwind/downwind but calms down more often.

Flaming Moe 13 Spirit Fowl 1 - An athletic group from the Milwaukee area, rumored to be a church group, many in their first or second tournament.  This game gets chippy as they bid very dangerously for almost every disc, which makes us mad, and we call them on it (using rules they don’t know), which makes them mad.  We blow off some steam in the hour before the next round starts and move on, ready to have some fun playing Ultimate.

Quarterfinals: Flaming Moe 13 Elephant Carwash 2 - EC is Brian L’s new team full of Olaf folks and friends.  They’ve got some talent and athleticism, and play hard.  They get an early break and go up 0-2.  We change up our defense a bit and start taking what they give us on offense, and blow the score open, although to their credit they don’t roll over.  It was a fun and competitive game, a huge breath of fresh air.

Semifinals: Flaming Moe 15 Reaction/Seiche 6 - Reaction was supposed to play us, but was running out of healthy players, and Seiche found themselves without an opponent in the 5th place bracket semis because of a forfeit, so the two teams combined.  Although they had to deal with combining the systems/chemistry of two teams, they looked pretty good.  We thank both teams for finding a way to give us a good game instead of forfeiting.  We trade points early and take a small lead for an 8-5 half.  ReSeichion(?) played a very strong break-away offense, taking advantage of our turnovers with some quick scores in both directions.  We have to value the disc more than in any other game of the weekend.  We pick up steam in the second half.

Finals: Flaming Moe 9 Kablammo 1 - Kablammo didn’t want to play us, except for their two loudest players, so they played us.  Right before the game they say they’ll only play to 9.  They claimed the upwind side, so we grabbed a disc before they could claim the pull too.  Of course they score the first point and try to call the game, but we go out to the line to keep it going.  At 5-1, Adro pulls of his armband to eliminate the half-time (Kablammo again gets wind/disc), and we pound out 4 more points, enabling both of their hands for beer.

Shout-Outs - Huge thanks to all of the friends and families who came out to Maple Plain to support the team!  Also, thanks to Tom Walker for organizing the mixed division and thanks to all the teams for making the trip.

Boston Invite 2007 Recap

June 26, 2007 | Tournaments, Travel, 2007 | 3:19 pm | Comments [4] |

Saturday - 70’s, partial cloudy, gusty upwind-downwind, beautiful fields.

Mischief 15 Flaming Moe 12 - Both teams traded downwind O points to 4’s or so.  We got the first upwind break, but they scored their upwinder right back, then broke us downwind to take a 6-5 lead.  They got another break to take half 8-6.  Mischief kept their edge, eventually gaining another break on us to win by 3.

Shazam Returns 13 Flaming Moe 11 - We again pulled upwind to start, and traded mostly downwinders in a tight game.  After a tie game at 11’s and softcap taking effect, they broke us twice.

Flaming Moe 15 Brass Monkey 11 or 12 - We took half up big, almost gave our lead back, and surged at the end in this huck-happy battle.

Flaming Moe 15 Tandem 13 - We gained a 4 point lead on Tandem in the first half.  In the 2nd half they mounted a comeback and pulled within 1, but our O then held strong to finish up by 2.

Sunday- A bit warmer and sunnier, less wind.  Fields still nice.

Flaming Moe 15 Slow White 10 - After receiving going downwind, we took half 8-4.  Slow came back in the 2nd half closing within 1 point at 11-10, but we pulled away again scoring the last 4.  Neither team requested observers (Moe hearts Slow), but the tournament was randomly providing them so we had the privilege of playing in an observed game this round.  Observers sped up the game significantly, allowing both teams some rest time before the next round.

Flaming Moe 12 or 13 Puppet Regime 10 - Puppet took an early lead with an effective zone that took us a while to adjust to.  We eventually tied it back up and pulled out ahead near the end.

Flaming Moe 13 Amp 9 - We traded O points early, then went up a bit to take half, then let them back in, and finished it off with a little run to close it out.

Flaming Moe had a terriffic experience at the Boston Invite.  We want to thank Mischief, Shazam Returns, Brass Monkey, Tandem, Puppet Regime, and Amp for making the trip as well.  We especially want to thank Slow White (Kris etc) and George, Geoff, and everyone else who helped make BI possible.   7 hard-fought competitive games all in one June weekend was amazing.

Up next for Flaming Moe: MUDI.  The Minnesota Ultimate Disc Invitational will take place on the Maple Plain (MN, 20 minutes west of the twin cities) polo fields on July 21-22, 2007.  We strongly encourage all mixed teams in the region to make the trip.   The tournament provides fruit, croissants, trainer, water, beautiful fields, cheap good food, massage therapists, and plenty of Ultimate swag and fun after-hours activities, all for a very affordable $230.   Checks are due July 10th.  Contact Greg Williams to register at willi133@umn.edu.

Poultry Days, Tryouts Over, On to Boston

June 14, 2007 | Tournaments, Travel, 2007 | 1:32 am | Comments [0] |

Last weekend Flaming Moe traveled to Versailles (OH) for Poultry Days with a group of tryouts.  We went 4-0 on Saturday.  Our 3rd opponent was a short-handed U of Iowa alum team (some Meth/Ice players),  and our 4th a team from Indiana U fresh off a college championships appearance.  On Sunday we defeated a team from Tulsa in prequarters.  In quarterfinals we managed to keep the game near serve up to 10-10 against a Madison/Colorado combo team, but they ran away with the last 3 points.  Our closest game of the weekend turned out to be our last,  losing to the impressive “Chicken Fingered” squad.  They had 2 Callahan winners on their squad, but our own Ninjavitis was the only player in the game to score a callahan, out-reading a pack of 5 big (multi-fouling) men, after we trapped CF in the back of their own end-zone thanks to one of Mikaware’s best pulls of the tournament.

Everyone played well at Poultry Days, so it was with great difficulty that we made our final tryouts decisions Monday night.  The newly formed team is now preparing for our first tournament together, the Boston Invite, on June 23-24.  We are honored to be included in a field of 8 elite mixed teams.  We’ll likely be seeded 7 of 8 based on last year’s UPA Championships results, so it should be a real test right out of the gates for this year’s Flaming Moe squad.

Tryouts Updates (Location and Schedule Change!)

May 21, 2007 | 2007 | 11:24 pm | Comments [0] |

The first round is over and players have a week to recover and see to other things.  We have cancelled the Sunday, May 27th tryout, so the next tryout will be Monday, May 28th.  We are also moving the location for the remainder of tryouts to Bossen Field.  We are hoping for more space there (if you’ve got another field suggestion, please email).  Here are the remaining tryout dates:

Monday, May 28th - Wednesday, May 30th - Friday, June 1st - Wednesday, June 6th - Poultry Days: June 9-10th, Versailles, OH

Remaining tryouts: 6pm at Bossen Field.  Bossen is on 28th Ave S @ E 54th St (North of Crosstown/Hwy 62 at the 28th Ave S Exit).

Tryouts are now only open to players who are seriously trying out for the team, as we are passed our first round.  Those who haven’t been to Moe tryouts are still welcome if playing with us could be a realistic option for you.  Ideally new tryouts could give us a heads up via email, but we’ll be happy to see you either way.

Thanks, and have a nice week.
